FAQ

Short answers about providers, cost, data, approvals, images and what happens when a run fails.

Does OctoPress include an AI model?#

No. OctoPress connects WordPress to the AI account, API provider or compatible endpoint you choose. You pay your provider directly, or use an existing subscription where the provider allows it.

Can I use my existing AI subscription?#

Yes, when the provider supports it. ChatGPT and eligible Grok subscriptions can sign in without an API key. Anthropic and the other API providers need an API key from the provider's dashboard. A Claude.ai chat subscription cannot be used.

Which providers are supported?#

ChatGPT and Grok sign-in, API keys for OpenAI, xAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, OpenRouter, OpenCode Go and Z.AI (including the ZAI Coding Plan), and any compatible custom endpoint. See Provider reference.

How much will it cost?#

OctoPress itself is free. AI usage is billed or limited by your provider. The usage panel shows token counts per chat so you can see what a conversation used. See Usage and context.

Will OctoPress change my site without asking?#

No. Write actions use enabled tools and permission checks, and they pause for your approval unless you set a chat to approve selected tools or everything. Each approval shows the tool and the fields it will change. See Approvals and permissions.

Can Octo publish content?#

Octo creates drafts by default. When explicitly requested, Manage Content can publish content or schedule it for a future time. Creation, updates and status changes require approval unless the chat auto-approves that tool. You can switch off Manage Content entirely in Settings → Tools.

Who can use OctoPress?#

The OctoPress menu is for administrators. Chats are private to each user.

Can I control which tools Octo uses?#

Yes. In Settings → Tools switch tools on or off and set the minimum WordPress role. Agents can be limited further in Settings → Agents. See Tool access and roles.

Can I use images in chat?#

Yes, when the selected model accepts images: PNG, JPEG, WebP and GIF, up to 4 per message. You can preview them, reuse them and save them to the Media Library. See Images in chat.

What data is stored in WordPress?#

Provider settings, encrypted provider credentials, chats, messages, settings, agents, tool, skill and extension settings, and with Pro, schedules and licence status. See Data and privacy.

Are API keys visible to browser users?#

No. Keys are stored on the server, encrypted, and never returned to the browser.

What happens if a run fails?#

Click Retry. It reuses your current provider, model and agent, so you can change them first. Your message is not duplicated.

Does it work on mobile?#

Yes. The chat workspace is compact and responsive. See Chat workspace.

What are the hosting requirements?#

PHP 8.1 or newer and WordPress 6.0 or newer. For long chats your host must allow WordPress requests to the same site and run WordPress cron. The free plugin does not need PHP command-line or shell access. See Common problems.

What does OctoPress Pro add?#

SEO metadata tools, WooCommerce store tools, plugin and theme development with Builder and Development Planner, scheduled PHP runs and runtime settings. See OctoPress Pro.

Can developers extend OctoPress?#

Yes. Other plugins can add tools, skills, agents and starter prompts. See docs/extensions.md in the plugin repository.
