Providers and models

Models

Sync a provider's models, enable the ones you want in chat, and choose default models for providers and agents.

Only models you enable appear in the chat. Each provider has a Models tab.

Enable models and set a default#

  1. Go to Settings → Providers and click a provider, then its Models tab.
  2. The counter reads, for example, 15 enabled of 15 synced models. Use Search models to filter.
  3. Switch Enabled on or off for each model. Use Enable all or Disable all for everything at once.
  4. Choose one enabled model as Default for that provider.
  5. Click Save models.

Get the latest models#

Click Sync models to fetch the current list from the provider. Check new models and switch on the ones you want, then click Save models.

You can also refresh from the chat: open Chat settings (the button above the message box) and click the refresh button next to Model. To protect providers from repeated requests, a provider can be refreshed once every 30 seconds. If you click too soon you will see Models were refreshed recently. Please wait a moment before refreshing again.

Which model is used?#

When you open a chat, OctoPress picks the first match from this list:

  1. The model saved with that chat.
  2. The model you used last in this browser.
  3. The default model of the selected agent (set on the agent's Profile tab).
  4. The provider's default model.

You can change the model at any time in Chat settings.

Choosing a model#

  • Pick models that support tool calling. Octo works by calling tools, and models without it work poorly.
  • To attach screenshots you need a model that accepts images. The image button explains when it cannot be used. See Images in chat.
  • Larger context windows suit long chats. See Usage and context.
  • Some Pro tools (image generation and hosted web access) only work with a ChatGPT Login or OpenAI API Key provider. See Tools reference.

Models are unavailable?#

The Models tab shows a warning when you have not finished connecting:

  • "Connect ChatGPT OAuth before configuring models." or the Grok equivalent: complete the sign-in first.
  • "Save credentials with an API key before configuring models.": paste a key and save.

    Type to search.
